A List of Favorite British Period Dramas Worth Binging

I absolutely LOVE period dramas—they’re my favorite (or should I say favourite?). These shows transport me to another time, and I watch for both the story and the stunning scenic backdrops. Most of these are set in England or Scotland, and I can’t get enough!

Below is my updated list of favorites. Most of them are completed series, but a few are still releasing new seasons and I’ve noted that. These dramas are a mix of fiction and non-fiction; historical settings with storylines inspired by real events.

Have you seen any of these? Am I missing any gems?

All Creatures Great & Small (5 seasons, so far) – A delightful series based on the life of a veterinary surgeon in the 1930-40s and set in the English countryside. Inspired by the real stories of Alf Wight (pen name James Herriot), it’s heartwarming, charming, and full of laughter and real-life challenges. Seasons 6–8 are on the horizon!

The Crown (6 Seasons) – An epic portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II’s life from before her reign and through decades of history. The storytelling is rich, the cast is superb, and the character dynamics are captivating.

Downton Abbey (10 Seasons) – A masterpiece! Set in a magnificent English estate, it follows the lives of an aristocratic family and their loyal household staff during the early 20th century. It blends history, romance, humor, and drama, offering a captivating look at social change and key historical events. Stick with it past the first few episodes—you’ll be hooked!

The English Game (1 Season) – A heartfelt story about the origins of football (soccer). Based on true events, it’s inspiring and family-friendly.

Outlander (8 Seasons) – A sweeping saga of love, war, and history with a time-travel twist! The romance between the two leads is unforgettable (and yes, sometimes steamy).

Peaky Blinders (6 Seasons) – Dark, gritty, and addictive. This drama about a historic Birmingham gang in the late 1800s is full of suspense and sharp storytelling.

Poldark (5 Seasons) – This is a British TV Show that takes place between 1781-1801 and follows the character of Ross Poldark after he returns to Cornwall from the American Revolutionary War. The storyline includes a love story, plenty of family drama, mine owner business hardships, and on. Anything that takes place in Cornwall, I must watch for the landscapes alone.

There are more

Reign (4 Seasons) – A dramatic, soap-opera-style take on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots and with 20+ episodes per season, it’s perfect for binge-watching.

Sandition (3 Seasons) – Based on Jane Austen’s unfinished novel, completed by Andrew Davies. This show is witty, romantic, and set in a charming seaside resort town. Jane Austen’s compelling writing style is definitely carried into this storyline.

Victoria (3 Seasons) – This series follows the life of Queen Victoria and takes place in the Victorian Era of the 1800’s. She takes reign at only 18 years old and continued to reign for 63 years. It’s a very compelling story of her life and relationships and will keep you yearning for more.
