Make & Take: Natural Laundry Detergent

Okay, so who is ready to get serious about eliminating toxic products from your life??! You guys, these toxic products are affecting you in SO many ways you could never think possible. I made a commitment to myself that as I ran out of certain commercial products I was using, I would try to make a natural version in it’s place. Or at least find a natural version of the product I could purchase until I could find the right recipe.

It isn’t always easy and takes some trial and error but that’s why I’m here to share what has stuck with me. I have a lot to learn but just awareness alone has definitely lead me to make better, natural choices all around.

Today, I’m here to tell you about laundry detergent.

I’ll admit I was a little skeptical at first about making this switch to a homemade natural version. But I have been using this for about two years now and no issues. In fact, I can’t even stand the smell and can detect the toxic chemicals in commercial brands. I’d much prefer my simple, natural recipe and I know my skin and body thank me. Wearing clothes all day long that have been washed in commercial detergents is wrecking havoc on your body. It’s time to take the challenge and try making your own.

Wool + Flax Laundry Detergent Soap

The only ingredients you need.

Natural Laundry Detergent (Liquid)

What you need //

  • 1 c. Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Unscented Baby-Mild Pure Castille Soap {click here}
  • 1 c. Borax {click here}
  • 1c. Arm & Hammer Washing Soda {click here}
  • 1 gallon distilled or purified water {click here}
  • 10 drops of Young Living Lavender essential oil*
  • 10 drops of Young Living Cedarwood essential oil*
  • 2 gallon glass container (This one is SO big!! You can use a 1 gallon but all of the soap might not fit. I might try increasing the recipe by 0.5x in the future.) {click here}
  • Washi tape label {something like this, click here or whatever you want!}

* Use any preferred combination of essential oils and change scents to your liking.

Heat distilled water. Add Borax and washing soda to glass container. Pour hot water into glass container and stir until dissolved. Add castille soap and essential oils. Allow to cool before moving to laundry room. Move carefully! Detergent is typically liquid but can solidify too. So do not worry if it stays liquid.

Use: Give a good stir before each use. Use 1/4 c. detergent or however much you feel necessary and depending on load size.
